Why are these changes happening?

The global health, research and publishing landscape has changed beyond recognition since Cochrane started life in the early 1990s. This presents us with some challenges but it has also provided new opportunities to change and improve the way we do things.

To maintain our hard-earned place as one of the world’s most trusted health evidence producers, we are adapting and directly addressing a diverse range of critical issues – from the loss of traditional funding sources and the move to a fully Open Access model to the increasing demand for rapid evidence in new formats accelerated by the Covid pandemic.

Why are we changing the way Cochrane Reviews are produced?

  • To streamline some of our more complex and time-consuming processes.

  • To diversify Cochrane’s potential revenue streams in response to less secure organisational income and increasing competition.

  • To meet our commitment of being fully open access by 2025, aligning with our mission of making evidence accessible to all and creating a more sustainable approach to evidence synthesis.

  • To protect and maintain our ongoing editorial independence by separating the authoring and editorial processes.

  • To evolve our Review Format to meet the changes in expectations and experience in those using our reviews.
